"The thermal properties of TUBEX PLUS® make it an ideal choice for thatched properties plus its miles quicker to install than traditional insulated systems. Along with neat components like the thatch terminal, it’s a great alternative to a rigid twin wall system where DTC can be 200mm, a great product for this market. Our team enjoyed installing the system, it’s now our number one choice for any thatched building."

Ben Ayres, Comfort & Heating & Stoves

Background

The Claycutters Arms is a grade ll* Listed Building with thatched roof, thought to have been built as a Devon Longhouse, and dating from the mid-1600s. The pub-restaurant is so-called as it is in the “Bovey Basin’, which has been a ball clay mining and exporting area for many years. This charming village pub has the full support of a large team including Olive the pub dog. With seating for 56 people indoors and 300 externally, there are plenty of places to enjoy some honest pub grub and some popular local beverages.

Solution

Having had their annual chimney sweep attend site it was found that the existing pumice chimney liners were compromised and a warning notice was issued deeming the appliances unsafe to use. Ben Ayres from Comfort Heating & Stoves a specialist fireplace and flue contractor from Exmouth was asked to assess the issues. Having completed a full camera survey Ben determined the best course of action would be to install the TUBEX PLUS® insulated flexible liner from SFL.

The classy Charnwood C5 Blue wood burner was carefully removed along with the stainless sump adaptor. Once the nose cone was attached the TUBEX PLUS® insulated flex was speedily pulled up through the stack, cut and finished with the TUBEX Thatch specific terminal. A custom made register plate was crafted on-site to allow the connector to the single wall to protrude through. Once the Charnwood C5 was repositioned and levelled the connecting pipe from the appliance was refitted with new fibre ropes, fixed and tested for soundness

Result

Installed within a few hours, the final thing was a good clean up and a thorough test with the appliance on. Needless to say, Olive, the dog was first on the scene to approve the now compliant installation.

Comfort Heating & Stoves has been trading for over 13 years and has 1000’s of installations to their name. Being HETAS certified and part of the Guild Of Master Sweeps they have a thorough understanding of the importance of safe and compliant wood burning & gas appliances. Using only the best materials and top quality stove brands Ben has long praised SFL’s TUBEX PLUS® as the best solution for lining Thatched properties, large voids and old stone properties with damp walls.
