Sustainability at SFL Flues & Chimneys
SFL holds ISO 14001 Environmental management standard and is committed to making every effort to increase the sustainability of production.
Located in the centre of the North Devon UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE, our responsibility to the environment is greater than ever, so all opportunities to minimise our impact are considered.
SFL operates a comprehensive recycling policy in conjunction with SWM recycling services. The largest waste stream is stainless steel scrap and mixed metals, but paper, cardboard, plastics and even rock-wool insulation is taken for processing.
SFL is pleased to host a wormery to deal with food waste and provide useful plant food for employees
All printed product literature is available on FSC® certified paper, using vegetable-based inks. It is also available electronically.
Where possible, SFL considers making product literature & information available only in PDF format. Although the market often requires hard copy, SFL would like to change this.
A miniature nature reserve has been established to the rear of the factory where the site backs on to the Taw Eastuary, an area of noted biodiversity.
Bird and bat boxes have also been installed to encourage wildlife.

Alongside these direct activities, SFL holds an annual collection of useful donations for the local Hedgehog sanctuary at Christmas time. This has been maintained since a hedgehog was rescued from the staff canteen one winter.
All energy streams are monitored heavily and constant improvements in efficiency are always considered. ‘Switch Off’ policies have been introduced and are policed to ensure machines are only run for as long as they are required. Manufacturing processes have been revised to increase energy efficiency where possible.
The recent installation of an in-house painting facility has reduced the amount of shipping involved in getting product to the paint facility by 100% and work is in progress to make the process more efficient in the future.
